Item Details
The Affe mit Schädel ("ape with skull"), is a famous work by the late-19th
century German sculptor Hugo Rheinhold. The statuette is otherwise known as the
“Affe, einen Schädel betrachtend” (chimpanzee viewing or contemplating a skull).
It was first exhibited in 1893 at the Große Berliner Kunstaustellung (Great
Berlin Art Exhibition). Some people, believing the sculpture to be a commentary
on Creationism, call it "Darwin's Mistake."
This replica, which is a deep brown color like ebony, measures 7 1/4" tall. The
base is 4" x 3 1/2". We think it is constructed from resin, but we cannot say
what material for certain.
