Item No. 1367

Koroush (Cyrus) the Great was the founder of the Achaemenid Dynasty and ruled the Persian Empire from 559 BC until his death in 529 BC.  During his reign, the empire expanded across Central Asia to the Indus River, and westwards to Egypt.

He is remembered today not only for his political and military strategies, but also as a wise and benevolent ruler.  The Edict of Restoration, for example, ensured that the Jews of Babylon were repatriated and given back their lands. It is considered the first declaration of human rights in recorded history.
